Butwal sub-metropolitan, located in Rupandehi district of Lumbini
zone of Nepal, is the capital of province number five. Situated on the banks of
the river Tinau in the lap of the Chure
Hills, the confluence of the hills and the Terai, it is known as the famous
commercial and educational centre of Nepal.
The city was formerly known as Khasyauli. Batauli is the old
market, Khasauli is the new market. Now Batauli and Khasyauli are called
Butwal. There are various rumours about the naming of this city. It is called
"Batauli" because of the large number of people from different
places.
According to historians, there was a market in Batauli
across the river Tinau. Batauli was the resting place of the Tibet of China and
Gorakhpur of India. They used to climb the hill carrying salt/clothes etc.
with the money sold from ghee. Old people are still found in Batauli telling
stories of walking to buy salt.
The city extends from the northern border to Belahiya
through Bataunli and Butwal. Many have not imagined such rapid urbanization in
the last decade and a half. From Chidiakhola of Butwal to Belahiya of Bhairahawa, it has become a single city.
Bhairahawa and Butwal are connected by a six-lane road. The
construction of a 22-km commercial highway connecting the Indian border to
Belahiya is almost complete. Work on construction of service track is in
progress. This road has also enhanced the beauty of Bhairahawa and Butwal. When
this road is fully completed, it will become a model of the country. Currently,
work is being done on service lanes, sidewalks, service boards, street lights,
greenery and others.
Wide roads, disability-friendly sky bridges, international
airports, star hotels, industrial parks, cricket stadiums, grand halls,
multiplexes, shopping malls... Anyone who reaches Bhairahawa-Butwal thinks
that the prosperity of the country is starting from here.
Disability-friendly sky bridges have been constructed on the
six-lane road connecting Butwal and Bhairahawa. This is the first time the
concept of this bridge has been introduced outside the capital in Nepal. The
bridge has been made completely disability friendly so that it can be used by
the disabled who have the most problems to cross the road. According to the sky
bridge construction company, which has been constructed using green zones on
both sides of the Butwal Behiya Six Lane road section. Ten disability-friendly
bridges have been constructed at the main intersection of Butwal-Bhairahawa
6-lane road. Sky bridges have been built on the way to Buddha Chowk, Devkota
Chowk and Eye Hospital in Bhairahawa. Similarly, disability-friendly sky
bridges have been constructed at Drivertole, Yogikuti,
Kalika Chowk, Raj Marg Chauraha, Milan Chowk, Hospital Line and other places in
Butwal.
Elderly and school children who used to be scared when
crossing the road some time ago are now stunned as they cross the road from the
bridge with confidence. The old people say that it is like reaching abroad.
With the expansion of roads, sky bridges are becoming mandatory. Due to the
increasing pressure of vehicles, many accidents occur while crossing the road.
After the construction of the sky bridge, the traffic jam on the road has been
reduced and the number of accidents has also been reduced.
With the construction of sky bridges, it seems necessary to
warn the road users to cross the road from the sky bridges. Considered to be
very important from a business point of view, this city is changing its face
day by day. The city, which is said to be operating as a night trade centre
after some time now, has emerged as one of the best business destinations in
Nepal.
